Discovering My Local Area, One Step at a Time

By James, Newcastle-under-Lyme

I’ve lived in Newcastle-under-Lyme my whole life, but I never realised how much I was missing until I joined Discovery Runs. I’ve always stuck to my usual running routes—same roads, same paths—but this event completely changed how I see my town.

On the first Saturday of the month, I decided to give it a try. After finishing the Parkrun at The Wammy, we set off for the extra 5K. It wasn’t just a run; it was an eye-opener. We passed quiet streets lined with gorgeous trees, cut through parks I’d never explored, and even stumbled upon a quaint little café I’m definitely visiting next weekend.

The best part? It didn’t feel like a workout. It felt like a group adventure. Some people ran fast, others took it slow, and a few of us even stopped to take in the views (okay, and to catch our breath!). Along the way, I got chatting with a couple of runners who shared their favourite local routes and tips for mixing up my runs.

By the time we finished, I wasn’t just proud of the distance—I was buzzing with a sense of discovery. It’s amazing how much there is to see when you step outside your usual routine. Discovery Runs isn’t about being the fastest or fittest; it’s about exploring, enjoying, and connecting.

I’ll be back next month, for sure. Who knew an extra 5K could make such a big difference?
