How I Found My Running Tribe with Discovery Runs

I’ll be honest: when I first heard about Discovery Runs, I was skeptical. “An extra 5K after a Parkrun?” I thought. “Who actually wants to run more?” But as someone who loves exploring new places, I decided to give it a go—and I’m so glad I did.

Our first run started at The Wammy, a place I thought I knew pretty well. But after finishing the usual Parkrun, we set off for the “Discovery” part, and suddenly I was running paths I’d never noticed before. We passed hidden trails, peaceful parks, and even a street I must have driven by a hundred times without realising how scenic it was. Running with the group, chatting about everything from running shoes to weekend plans, felt more like an adventure than a workout.

One thing I didn’t expect? The people. It’s rare to find a group that makes you feel so welcome, no matter your pace. Whether I was jogging alongside a seasoned marathoner or someone just starting their running journey, everyone had a story to share, and everyone cheered each other on. By the end of the run, I wasn’t just thinking about how far we’d gone—I was laughing with new friends who understood why getting up at silly o’clock on a Saturday is actually fun.

And then there’s Adri—completely mad, like a whirlwind of energy wrapped in running shoes, but in the best possible way. He’s the kind of person who makes you laugh mid-run, even when your legs are protesting. Whether it’s his passion for running or his contagious enthusiasm for exploring, he’s a big part of what makes Discovery Runs so unique.

Now, I’m hooked. Discovery Runs isn’t just about running further; it’s about running differently—taking time to explore, enjoy, and connect. It’s reminded me that running isn’t just about fitness; it’s about finding joy in the journey and the people you meet along the way.

So, if you’re on the fence like I was, take the leap. Who knows? You might just find your new favorite route—or your new running tribe (and maybe someone as delightfully mad as Adri to keep you laughing along the way).
